Surrounding Environment and Adjacent Landowners

To the west and sharing an entrance to the marsh is the UC Irvine Arboretum . To the east of the marsh is the final reach of San Diego Creek channel, managed by OC Watersheds, including a portion of which is within UC Irvine property.  San Diego Creek releases into Upper Newport Bay, a tidal salt marsh with remnant mudflats, approximately 1/2 mile downstream.  Upper Newport Bay is owned by the City of Newport Beach, OC Parks, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and it’s management includes several organizations, including the Newport Bay Conservancy, Back Bay Science Center , and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy

To the south, and also UCI property, is a former landfill now managed as open space under the Orange County Natural Communities Conservation Plan ( To the north, freshwater wetland habitat continues as a series natural treatment ponds, but ownership and management changes to the Irvine Ranch Water District Link IRWD:, and the land is intercepted by Campus Drive.  A hydrological connection of cleaned fresh water is maintained by a waterway with control gates, passing underneath the road.
